Nerve tissue

Nerve tissue

  • It is the principal tissue of the nervous system. It consists of neurons (nerve cells), which are globally joined into communicating networks of the body (or some parts of it), and cells of glia, which exert a number of accessory functions to meet vital needs of the neurons
  • The main neuronal feature is to reflect environmental impacts by modifying electric tension on cell membranes, thereby the cells conduct nerve impulses via their system of cell processes surrounded by glial cells (nerve fibers). Conduction covers long distances to other neurons or effector structures (glands, muscles) via a system of specialized intercellular junctions (synapses)
