Cell cycle
  • includes all the events between two consecutive cell divisions or between cell division and cell death
  • comprises mitosis (cell division) and interphase
  • a cell enters the interphase immediately upon completing division. First, it passes through a postmitotic period (phase G1, an increase of cell mass to gain that of the mother cell). After that the cell begins to prepare for the next division or enters a resting state (phase G0 #1, #2) to exert its specific functions
  • when G0 is finished, the cell can begin to prepare for a new cell division or to die
  • cells that prepare to divide first pass through the synthetic (phase S, DNA replication) and then premitotic (phase G2, preparation for mitosis) period
  • cell death is the final step of cell cycle for a number of differentiated cells. It is realized via such mechanisms as apoptosis (programmed cell death) and necrosis (accidental cell death). It can be a result of terminal cell differentiation
