Ultrastructure of nerve cell body

Cerebral cortex
(TEM image)

The nerve cell body of a multipolar neuron (14,700X) is polygonal. It contains areas with rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, polyribosomes, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes #1, #2 and mitochondria #1, #2. Microtubules #1, #2 and microfilaments are most distinct at a site where this neuronal projection is branching off. The rounded nucleus contains 1-2 nucleoli and predominantly finely dispersed euchromatin.

In light microscopy and at a great magnification (27,000X), the distribution of Nissl bodies in the cytoplasm matches the localization of complexes containing cisterns of rough endoplasmic reticulum #1, #2; it also matches agglomerations of free-floating ribosomes.
