Dense irregular connective tissue

In the skin, dense irregular connective tissue constitutes the reticular dermis.
Intercellular substance of dense irregular connective tissue generally contains collagen fiber bundles. The bundles are oriented in different directions, and so their sections are longitudinal, transverse, or oblique (elastic fibers are not stained).
The content of the ground substance is not high (do not confuse it with clear spaces between the fiber bundles, those are merely artifacts of slide preparation).
There are connective tissue cells between the fiber bundles.
